Figure collecting and you

Flame Haze Shana

Shana demands you to tell her why you like her, is that a turn-on for you ^^;?

There is something that’s been on my mind when I look at my figures, “Why do I buy them?” ^^. I wonder if those in the figure collecting community or others that have an interest in figures themselves would like to give their own answer to that question. There are many reasons why I’m a collector but I would like to know why others collect them. Is it because of the detail on a figure? A anime character made 3D? A decoration (which is much more interesting than a vase lol ;p) for the home?

There are con’s to figure collecting, but don’t let that deter you from becoming a collector. You could have the legendary “leaning figure” which is a figure that eventually leans with time due to 1) unevenly distributed weight causing one side to lean more than the other, 2) the “one-footers” that put all the weight on one point rather than spread out, and 3) HEAT being the worst, so keep your figures in a cool location ^^. Thankfully we have people like super rats who made a tutorial to fix leaning figures.

Price is another issue that deters people, as figures have a range of costs from $40-$80, though most you find range in the 50’s-60’s. But you don’t have to buy expensive figures, you can find great deals on figures online, check out the “bargain” figures and you will find some pretty great figures that could be 50% off the original price, like Alter’s Tsuruya from HobbySearch. There is also the figure maker Bome that produces pretty cheap figures with a couple figures like Ignis and Kos-Mos that look pretty good, usually around $20.

Figure’s are wonderful, you don’t even have to know what anime/game they come from, there are even figures that are original and not truly based off a anime/game. You could want the figure because it’s cute like I do some of the time lol. I have no knowledge of the figure but if it’s cute and within my price range then I will buy it. Just like I did with Hikaru below ^^.

Hikaru

You could love a figure for it’s great detail on it’s clothes or because of the clothes that a certain figure is wearing. Detail is very important for a figure and could make it a best seller or a average seller. Details like the wrinkles on a figure’s clothes, face, and even the clothes themselves (or the lack of with some figures ;p) are what collector’s like myself go for. If the face just looks awkward, even on popular anime/game characters, then you can expect not many people to buy it, even if they are hardcore with the anime/game. Yet some of the details on figure’s can go over your head as you don’t expect the level of detail that you see. You can find lots of details on figures like Shino’s Char & Natsu’s Char (pretty clothes), Suneo’s Kinoshita Rumi (sexy lingerie), lu-k’s Misa (sexy stockings),super rat’s Saber maid servant (really detailed frills), Adun’s Halloween Girl (cute and funny butler ghost added), Setsuna-san’s Saber, maid version (not everyone gets a nice chair to sit on, though she doesn’t actually sit on it lol), ron~’s Melissa (there’s a sexy secret under that pumpkin), valho’s Liu MeiFeng (torn dress ^^), Danny’s Chitose (so many beads, what are they for ;p), or my own Kanu ^^ (gothic lolita style).

I don’t know about everyone, but I know people like myself, lu-k, and super rat’s like to make little stories to go with our figures. I really love to read lu-k’s nenroid stories lol, they make me laugh every time I read his comic book style stories. We can be creative with our stories, giving more life to our figures. It helps me with my “creative side” too I guess lol, helps when I have to make reports for school. I have stories that vary from idol shoots like Ryuna and Blanc below to apocalyptic stories with Hikaru.

blanc & Ryuna

Having a figure is something that is really cool to have and something I recommend to lovers of anime who want to own a piece of it. I want to know why others buy figures or have a interest in figures themselves? If you don’t have a figure, go out and buy a figure or else this will happen to you….

funky birth

Lol, just kidding ;p.

    When I was first looking for a figure, all I really wanted was just Saber in her armor and I thought that would be the end of that. Simply because I didn’t want to power up the PC just to be able to see her as the wallpaper or something like that. I wanted to be able to see my favorite character easily and as and when I wanted to without going through too much hassle. And nope, posters weren’t an option somehow.

    To be honest, I got into everything really late, and having never paid attention to these sort of things, I always thought that the transition from 2D to 3D was bound to be poorly done and was highly skeptical of figures. Then I got the Saber from EBcraft, and something just went off inside of me I guess, it really didn’t look as bad as I thought after all! xD So began the collecting of every F/sn figure I could get. And that collection soon expanded into other animes I liked as well.

    Not long after, inspired by people such as lu-k, super rats, valho, and a whole lot more others who take really awesome pictures of their figures, I began my poor imitation of them and it graduated into appreciation of detail as well even if I didn’t know the character. Of course, my loli/uniform tendencies contributed a great deal into some choices as well ^^;

    Presently, I can’t really pinpoint what makes me grab a figure. It’s probably a combination of many factors such as: it looks great and detailed, I like the character, and/or it’s part of a set I accidentally started off (:p). And thats all for now before I start writing my life story here xD~

    my method of choosing a figure is rather weird if you might.

    i tend to buy on impulse. its sort of like love at first sight.(though i have a leaning towards maids) examples would be my Amami Haruka which i bought on a whim much to the chagrin of my parents.(i guess they thought it was a waste of money)

    but still i think collecting figure are sort of like an addiction that is near impossible to control.

    To be frankily honest, I don’t know why I started collecting figures. Even to this day I still don’t have a solid reason to either. I started off with one and eventually I started collecting more and more. It’s very similar to me collecting all the anime merchandise even though I have no use for it. Though I guess you could say I collect figures for the sake of collecting, lol.

    I have no reason other than ohhh pretty! At least, I never thought about why I spend so much money on it. I could have upgraded to a 50 inch HDTV if I didn’t. Curses to my pervertedness!

    I’d be quite picky in terms of figures.
    First of all, it has to be realistic and close to the original artwork (it can even go to details like the size and place of the face’s element, the legs and arms’ proportions). The pose is secondary, though I don’t really would want one to do the “Matrix”.
    Moeness is an important factor as well and cast-off option is not required. And so on…

    To sum it up, I always love to see other people’s figures to see if my tastes are sharpened enough to be a good critic and to seek beauty (and maybe perfection) in what X or Y sculptor did.

    Well I really don’t know how I pick figures, I mean I jsut do it, if I like it I’ll probably buy it.

    I’m interested in figures because I used to collect action figures when I was a kid, but I stopped after I started getting into video games. I want the Evangelion Unit 01 figure or the Tachikoma figure if they have one. I’m probably into more machine type figures, but I do want to get a couple of beautiful anime girl figures. The Devil May Cry Dante and Indiana Jones figures that Danny posted were also appealing. The hobby is expensive, but I gotta have them!

    I started collecting because I saw two Rurouni Kenshin figures. I told myself that I’d stop once I had all 5 of them. Then came the time when I completed the characters but that didn’t stop me from buying more figures.

    I tend to buy whatever catches my eye — whether I know the character or not. The only thing is, I’m practical so price is always an issue ;_;

    @shino: I like your pictures ^^.
    @Setsuna-san: Impulse buying happens all the time with me ;p. Figure buying is indeed addicting, I wonder if they make a patch for it lol, j/k.
    @Adun: True, just to have it is enough to make one buy it.
    @super rats: Pretty, pretty, shiny, shiny ^^.
    @D_Blade: Pose is important, it’s one of the factors I didn’t mention lol.
    @Rakushu: No problem, glad you found the name ^^.
    @shinji: Ya, figure collecting is expensive. But like I mentioned in the post, you can find figures for cheap like the figures from Bome or you can find some great deals online too.
    @R.O.: There are tachikoma figure’s available for purchase which are usually jointed so you can move the legs and arms. My brother also loves tachikoma’s lol.
    @coeli: We all try to stop, but the figures…they call us ;p.
