Paper….mmmhhh, delicious

The world is wrought with terror as numerous places are being attacked. Not even the some of the strongest world powers can stop the destruction. Even the president of the United States is attacked as he watches his personal guards, the secret service, fail at the hands of a person who seems to able to wield the electricity in the air. The person is able to stop bullets shot at him with electricity and after he stops the bullets, he uses it to send a wave of destruction that ripples through the white house and causes a destructive aftershock after it that demolishes it with only flames to remain. With the secret service knocked out, the mysterious man walks about to the president if what he just blew up was the library which the president responds with a no and wets himself. The mystery man leaves the grounds with the white house in flames behind him.

Across the ocean in Japan, we enter into a room filled with books, quite literally, as books are everywhere from the top of shelves they occupy to the floor littered with books. A phone rings and a dazed girl answers only to wake up quite suddenly when the person at the other end of the phone offers her a job. Excited over the job, the girl decides to go out and celebrate by buying another book. But the bookstore she goes to is mysterious, the only way you can get to the bookstore is if you enter a pin code through a elevator’s buttons and swiping a bar code to go down. The girl finds a book she truly loves and reaches up for it when she sees another hand reach for it. A slightly older woman with a slightly mean look looks at the girl, to which the girl smiles to and takes the book. The girl walks away with the book and the woman looks like she was about to pull a gun when the girl bumps into another customer, the girl looks back to see no one behind her.

With the book in hand, the girl steps out and starts to read it at a crosswalk when a huge swarm of bee’s suddenly fill the streets, which the girl doesn’t notice as she is too immersed within her book, the bees cause cars and trucks to flip over including a truck filled with paper that overturns and its contents falling over the girl and causing her to fall down. The girl suddenly notices the bees and puts a wall of paper in between her and the bee’s as if by magic. Suddenly, the bee’s seem tranquil as they go inside a container held by a man riding a gigantic grasshopper. The man takes a look at the book in the girls hands and takes the book, which looks to be a mission given to him, by having his grasshopper stick out it’s tongue to grasp the book and bring the book to him. The grasshopper flies away but is anchored down by one end of a ribbon the girl managed to wrap around one of the grass hoppers legs while the other stays firmly in the ground. The girl climbs cars and buses to get up to the grasshopper and manages to get her book back before she magically cut’s the ribbon with her fingers that result in the grasshopper flying uncontrollably towards a building which it crashes into and causing the man to fly towards a billboard and crashes into it. Afterwards, a seam seams to open up on the man’s backside and a swarm of bee’s move off in the distance. A blond man, who the girl notices and calls “Joker,” seems to have come in response to the grasshopper man who calls the girl Yomiko and said her services are required as “The Paper.”

At the “British Libray Headquarters,” Yomiko learns of the mystery man back in the US who not only destroyed the white house but library of congress as well and stole 600 manuscripts from the library. The US has asked the British Library to bring the manuscripts back to the US. She also learns the mans name, Hiraga Gennai, who has died years ago. This is a bit of a surprise but it was explained that Gennai’s DNA was one of those stolen earlier at a gene conservation company and that he was probably brought back to life. Yomiko’s was then given a mission to look over what remains of the library of congress for clues with a old partner, Drake.

At the library, Yomiko meets the woman from the bookstore in Japan who introduces herself as “Ms. Deep” (what a sexy name ;p), who offers her hand to Yomiko and it appears Yomiko is about to shake the hand but it actually passes through Ms. Deep’s hand and she herself suddenly disappears. Turns out she went through the floor and tells Yomiko of her power to “pass through and go deep inside objects” hence her codename. Suddenly, a glider that looks like a bird appears out of no where and the operator of the glider introduces himself as “Otto Lilienthal” and that he has come to get the book, which she is currently carrying, that caused Yomiko trouble earlier with the man riding the grasshopper. He manages to take it away from her and in amazing aerodynamic skills manages to pass through the hallways of the library and into the sky. Otto passes through New York City due US helicopters chasing him wherever he goes, not allowing for a clean escape. He passes over a bridge that Gennai stands on top of. Gennai manages to drain all of the electricity of New York City and shoots the electricity at the fleet of helicopters with the result being all of them being destroyed.

Yomiko, Drake, and Ms. Deep were chasing after Otto in a helicopter when a surge of electricity passes through the helicopter due to Gennai’s attack, causing the three to bail out on top of a tall building. Seeing no other way to chase Otto, Yomiko decides to take out the paper inside of the trunk that she has been carrying and makes a gigantic paper plane out of it O_o. Yomiko and Ms. Deep go in the crevice of the plane and Drake throws it off the building which causes it to plunge due to Yomiko forgetting to make the tail end, but she makes one right before they hit the ground and they fly off to follow Otto and take the book back. They manage to catch up to Otto but he manages to elude them by attaching his glider to Yomiko’s plane to cause them to go into a spinning dive and releases them before he hits the ground. But Yomiko manages to recover the plane and the two go back into the sky. At this time, Yomiko decides a change in plan is needed and we see the two pass by the statue of liberty which Nancy jumps off the plan towards and uses her abilities to go inside safely. Yomiko continues after Otto and manages to damage him and his glider before he drops pipe bombs onto her plane. The pipe bombs explode but Yomiko manages to create a barrier around herself out of the paper plane before she is hurt and manages to attach a line of paper to the glider. Otto’s glider is about to pass the statue of liberty’s torch where we see Ms. Deep standing on top of with a hook on her hand which she manages to attach to the line of paper. This causes Otto’s glider to spin in a circle around the torch and lose control of the book before he crashes into the torch in a small explosion. Before the crash, Yomiko jumps off to save the book and is saved by one of the points on the statues head going through her coat. Nancy sees this and thinks it was pretty dumb to do but shows Yomiko’s love for books as she helps Yomiko up from the edge. Yomiko thanks Ms. Deep, but she announces that she rather be called Nancy because Ms. Deep isn’t cute ;p.

End of Part 1

Thoughts:
This is actually a old anime that is split into 3 OVA’s or is one movie if have the dvd. It came out in 2001 but is one of my favorites of all time. But why the old anime you ask, well I was talking with D_Blade the other day and he asked me about R.O.D. which I explained to him. Then the topic came up of doing an anime review on a older anime and I thought, “I haven’t done one of those in a while, so R.O.D. would be a good choice to do a review on.” Plus it’s good to mix it up once in a while, as I usually do reviews on mainstream anime, so having something like this is good once in a while. If you noticed the title you would see “Part 1,” for this is actually the first of three reviews I would do for R.O.D. because one post would be super long and would take a while to do and read. So having it split up makes it easier for you and me lol. I will continue with the next one in my next post followed by the last part. Look forward to parts 2 and 3 ^^. I also have pictures of the Yomiko figure if you want to check that out, she looks quite sexy in her pantsu ;p.

Yomiko = meganekko = bibliophile = pure win.

I obviously watch older series as mentioned in the conclusion of this post. For me, it is important to catch the wave/hype, but also never to ignore or look at relics/gems of the past with contempt or disdain (this is also why I tend to love playing old videogames from the NES/SNES/PS1… eras)
I will give it a try, since it’s easy and fast to watch. I briefly browsed the post, since it naturally contains the synopsis and spoilers.
With that, I will return to my usual activities. :)

Loved the ova, the series didn’t sit too well with me ¯\(º_o)/¯

    6. 6 shinji

This is also one of favorites. The series is kinda slow but believe me it will conclude everything and will answer all the questions in the OAV. It has a nice twist and beautiful ending.

@Shin: Really? I actually liked the series, I wanted to see more of Yomiko which did eventually happen.
@shinji: Yep, you are correct ^^, plus it has lots of spins you wouldn’t expect.

    8. 8 D_Blade

Loved the OVA, between the crazy references (loved the Saiyuki one), the klutzy behavior of Yomiko, the music (between MGS or James Bond-like/ themes and classical ones), technological gems (Steamboy surely got inspired from it) and great plot twists, R.O.D. the OVA is simply exemplary.
