Sue is just awesome ^^
Genshiken II has recently ended but within the last few episodes did the anime really make me smile. The anime ends with episode 12 and leaves us with a nice heartwarming moment, but the really great episodes occurred in episode 10 and 11. This was due to the introduction of two characters who the genshiken group got quite a surprise from ^^. The two characters are actually friends of Ohno from America, as Ohno actually moved back to Japan after staying in America for schooling. You have the quite talkative, sexy, loud, affectionate, tall, and busty Angela who gives everyone a surprise with her outwardness, especially Madarame (Angela has glasses moe). Angela’s better half, Sue, is my favorite out of the two. Sue is hilarious, she’s usually quiet, short, flat, and a bit gothic looking, but what really wins me over is her use of anime dialog in the most random of places lol. The two make such a great combo and helped make Genshiken II quite the success.
Genshiken’s heartwarming ending comes after a very depressing moment. Throughout the latter half of Genshiken, Sasahara is looking for a job as he will soon graduate and will need a job to support himself. Based on his experience of being the editor for Genshiken’s first doujin, Sasahara goes out to find a manga editor job. Unfortunately, due to his lack of experience and bad interview skills, Sasahara was rejected from one interview after the other. So much so that he lost his enthusiasm and trust in his own abilities that he goes through a phase of self pity. With the latest failed interview under his belt, Sasahara goes into a slump and winds up not even shaving the next day which the genshiken group notices. Especially Saki who was a bit freaked out about the beard Sasahara was growing. After Sasahara tells the group of his recent failure, he tells them of his decision to lay back and forget about his job hunt; this news led Saki to snap and scold Sasahara for his negative attitude, but Sasahara didn’t care that much. But when Ogiue was disappointed about Sasahara’s attitude, it struck a cord with him. He suddenly gets invigoration after thinking over what everyone says and goes on the job hunt again. He finds a ad for a manga editor job and goes for it. After the seemingly good interview, Sasahara later finds a job contract waiting in his mail. He calls Ogiue, who rushes out of the shower naked to pick up the phone, to tell her the great news first. Then everyone else learns of of it and congratulates him. The heartwarming ending shows everyone happy at what they do or accept it as there way of life.
Genshiken’s beginning was alright but got better in the end. My respect for Kuchiki (the guy no one likes, especially the girls) even went up in one episode. Ohno was holding a recruiting drive for genshiken, as she became the recent chairman of the club, and attracted people through cosplay outfits. Kuchiki was ordered to sit on the side by Ohno, as he was driving away customer, when Kuchiki suddenly noticed a guy putting one of the outfits into his bag. Kuchiki stops the guy and timidly asks him to open up his bag which the guy refuses and gets quite angry about. Then Kuchiki gets mad and says he won’t lose in an “anger battle.” The guy ends up head butting Kuchiki to the ground and throws the outfit he stole at Kuchiki before runs away (part where my respect went up for Kuchiki). Ohno suddenly notices Kuchiki hugging the outfit and starts screaming at him to let go of it (my favorite part was her screams ^^), which angers Kuchiki as he was trying to help. Suddenly Kuchiki puts on the outfit (I believe it’s Ryomou Shimei from Ikki Tousen) and starts freaking out Ohno more (part where my respect for him dropped into the negative). Ogiue dressing up in a succubus like cosplay outfit was kawaii and sexy ;p.
The best part of this season was the ever hilarious gaijin (foreigner) appearance of Ohno’s friends, Angela and Sue. I like how the characters were depicted as “normal” gaijin that didn’t represent the normal stereotype. They studio did a great job of depicting Angela and Sue as your normal Americans, I would know as I have friends just like them lol. Everything that I mentioned earlier applies to the two characters. The one thing you probably will notice about Angela is her “eyes,” especially so because the animators give you lots of close up shots of it.

Sue is hilarious because of her random lines from animes in Japanese, especially when she said “Welcome Back Master” and these guys who were close by did a little fist pump when they heard it. Asking Ogiue to sign the doujin she made because a page was “hardcore” was a great scene because Sasahara, Ogiue, and Madarame freaked out when the saw the “hardcore scene.” Another hilarious incident was Sue “exposing herself” to Ogiue while they were at an onsen which freaked Ogiue out.
Overall Genshiken II was a 8 out of 10 for me, the saving grace was Angela and Sue. I do hope another season will be produced, as the show is good overall but could use some randomness like Angela and Sue. I actually hope Angela and Sue come back lol, they made the ending of Genshiken a great one.

yup, gotta love the gaijin otakus, they really spiced up the show.
my favourite line from sue was “anta baka?”. she really looked like the second coming of Asuka there. i guess that there will be a few OVA’s coming sooon because they still havent resolved the relationship between Sasahaara and Ogiue.

Genshiken 2 was an enjoyable ride but I have to agree that it got better towards the end. Though episode 12 is one that I can relate to quite well with Sasahara’s search for a job. The dilemma of going to job interview one after another and getting rejected due to inexperience was one of the things that hit me pretty hard as I experienced all of that for a grueling 10 months. I was even at the point that I didn’t think I could find a job and got pretty depressed.
But things perked up after a while and I’m here where I am now.

yes I can also sympathize with Sasahara’s job hunting, that really happens in real life. Overall I really like genshiken, it made me realize that I should have just organized an anime/manga club in college instead of joining a political club hehe

I haven’t watched Genshiken II yet but did they voice cast the gaijin characters in English?!

@Setsuna-san: Sasa X Ogiue combo lol. “Anta Baka,” she does it so well ^^.
@Adun: Yes, I can tell lol, with your recent expense report for 2007; quite the large sum of money you spent.
@shinji: I actually tried joining the university’s anime club, but they were a bit more “otaku” than I, which freaked me out a bit so I decided to drop out lol.
@Windbell: They did do it in English, though not very fluent. But I believe it was also on purpose so that people from Japan might be able to understand it better if it went slower, I know I need to sometimes hear Japanese words at a slower pace to know what it is. Ogiue and Saki also spoke English in their own voice.
God I love Sue, I knew from the second she entered with Asuka’s trademark “Anta baka?” line that she would be my fav character of the series.

The Manga is 9 volumes, and we have two full ones left, so that’s enough for either a Genshiken 3, or a substantial OVA Series, though that will be the last one. I think anyone who doesn’t know yet how the story turns out will be very pleased. And yes, Angela and Sue return.
