Art is a wonderful thing, as the saying goes “A picture is worth a thousand words.” So how many words do you get from an anime show about art? Whatever it is I bet it’s more than a thousands, we’ll see as I talk about it lol. For those of you who wish, count how many words generated in this post and we will see if it beats 1000. For I will talk about Hidamari Sketch, a slice of life anime thrown together with comedy, chibi, and a bit of cuteness that is not overbearing. I had somehow missed this anime, I missed it by a long shot too lol, as the final show actually aired. So for those of you who don’t watch animes until they finish showing every episode, give this a look and it might be one that you enjoy watching.

It’s early in the morning when Yuno (brown haired girl, signiture is the X hairpins she wears) wakes up and boy is it cold. Yuno gets ready to go to school and is about to leave when her neighbor, Miya (blond haired girl, her signiture is a bit weird but matches her a bit as it is a kyubi (fox) mask, for she is a bit mischievous in nature but fun), gives her a friendly “ohaiyo” (good morning). They talk a bit then head downstairs where they meet their senpai’s (upperclassmen), Hiro (pink haired girl, check out her hair and you will notice the back hair is a bit snake-like, her signiture is actually Medusa’s hair lol) and Sae (blue haired girl and her signiture is her glasses). The girls all live in the Hidamari Apartments which is like a apartment for those attending Yamabuki High School (a art school) as it is nearby. They talk about how their New Year’s went then left for school, but before they left Miya asked Yuno, or Yunotchi which Miya calls her by, if she finished her homework but unfortunately Yuno didn’t and freaked out.

Later at school, the homeroom teacher, Yoshinoya (the cute green haired one ;p), talks about what she did over the winter break including talking on the phone, karaoke, and going to a shrine for New Year’s before she begins the days lesson. After the lesson, Yuno went up to Yoshinaya and asked her if she could accept her homework late. Yoshinaya responded with a smile on her face “No.” It’s lunch time and Miya-chan asks if Yuno wants to go to lunch together which Yuno agrees to but tells Miya to go ahead. For Yuno rushes back to her room to finish up her homework which is a collage. She partially finishes the layout but doesn’t know what else to add when she spots a New Year’s card given to her by Yoshinaya sensei and adds it to complete it. She then rushes back to school and Yoshinaya accepted it for it was due in the next class period. But because of all that work, Yuno didn’t have a chance to eat. Miya suddenly brings out an onigiri (rice ball), which was originally Hiro’s who was worried about Yuno not eating, and gives it to Yuno who thoroughly enjoys it.

Later, Yuno and Miya are on clean up duty and go outside to find a blanket of snow on the school grounds that haven’t been touched. So what else is there to do besides enjoy it ^^. Which is what Maya starts to do as she beings to make the year’s “first creative work,” as Yuno, Hiro, and Sae look on. When Maya is finished, in the snow it read’s “Love and Piece” in English which Sae takes a picture of from the top floor of the school. Hiro and Sae head back to the apartments where they talk about their kohai(lowerclassmen) and the days when they were younger while Yuno and Miya stay back and build snow sculptures and throw snowballs at each other. After Yuno and Miya are finished playing, they head back to the apartments but Yuno wants to thank Hiro for the onigiri before returning to her room. They go to Hiro’s room and Yuno thanks Hiro who invites them in for tea. Sae is still with Hiro when Yuno notices Sae’s collage which hasn’t been turned in. Sae notices this and through deductive reasoning knows that Yuno missed lunch due to work on the collage. Miya acknowledges Sae’s detective work when she notices a picture of the “creative art” she had made earlier in the snow. Hiro points out that the word “piece” Miya made wasn’t the correct “Peace” that she should have used. Miya is a bit shocked and tries to cover this mistake by saying “she wanted to see if anyone noticed.” Yuno notices that Sae took other pictures of Yuno, Miya, and the snow sculptures that they made.

Yuno suddenly gets a text message from Yoshinaya sensei commending Yuno on her “rush job,” especially the part where it had Youshinaya’s picture and New Years card. She says that it had great subject matter that confused Yuno so much that she had to draw a rough sketch of it to show the others her confusion. When Yuno pointed out Yoshinaya’s card, Hiro showed her the one she received from the sensei that confused Yuno even more due to the different picture on the card. Yuno goes to her apartment to get her card, Miya and Sae go to get theirs as well. It turns out everyone got a different pose of their sexy sensei on each of their New Year cards. Hiro wonders if the “cosplay queen” has anymore like that, as there are 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac (btw I’m the year of the dragon so see if you can how old I am just by that fact alone). Yuno once again thanks Hiro for the onigiri but wonders why she gave it up. Turns out Hiro is on another one of diets ue to the many rice cakes she had eaten when she visited her parents and doesn’t want to eat as much (I think she looks fine the way she is ^^). Hiro is also a bit jealous of Miya who is able to keep her figure even though she eats so much, a good example is the extra large pork cutlet curry dish (Mmmmmmm ^^) that she had ordered at lunch. After the conversation was over, Yuno decided it was time to head back to her apartment after thanking Hiro one last time. Back at her apartment, Hiro decides to take a nice relaxing bath (which is overflowing O_o) and contemplate everything that had happened that day.

Impression:
Like I said before I actually caught this a bit late lol, so late that the season is finished. But the funny thing is it began in January of this year and only recently finished being subbed; the actual show finished showing in March. They are planning another season Hidamari Sketch X 365 in 2008, so its not all bad that the subs finished recently lol. This is a funny slice of life anime that is the true essence of life, that is doing everything that normal people do as well lol. No gigantic monsters, crazy powers (though sensei’s cosplaying could bring an otaku to his knees lol), giant robots, transforming people, etc, just normal life that we can relate with. I know Sketchbook is out and that is another slice of life anime that deals with art, but I think Hidamari Sketch is a bit faster paced. My favorite character is Miya, her energetic and happy go lucky attitude is kawaii. I thought she looked especially cute when she got a tan and as a result of a cat resting its paw on her stomach, a paw print was left on…..soooo moe. Check this anime out as this is one that brings comedy to your heart and soul lol.

Btw, I estimated the amount of words from this post (not counting this sentence) to be around 1080 lol, so I guess an anime about art has more than a 1000 words ^^.
