Night Wizard

What would you rather do in life? Go to school or battle evil with cool magical powers? I would personally choose battling evil lol, though I would probably have shorter lifespan ;p. But for Renji Hiikari, he has no choice but to do both. For he is a Night Wizard, one who protects the world from impending darkness.

A boy stands before a cute girl who asks him to accept her request with either a “yes” or “OK.” But the boy recognizes that either answer results in agreeing to the request and refuses answering with either answer. But the girl just complements Hiiragi’s answer and rings a bell that causes a trap door to open underneath Hiiragi where he drops down from a castle in space and heads down to Earth. On Earth, a army of skeletons have risen from the ground as a red moon lights the now blood red sky. The enemy, called Emultors, come to attack Earth during that time. Traditional human weapons do not work on Emultors and only weapons infused with magic can affect them. A lone red headed girl stands up against the army of skeletons as she summons “Gunner’s Broom”, a gigantic high powered magic rifle. Suddenly, Hiiragi falls out of the sky and lands on one of the skeletons. Hiiragi summons a magical rune sword to fight off the skeletons as the red haired girl pummels them with her rifle.

On another part of the world, at Kimei Private Academy, a cute transfer student introduces herself as Shihou Elis. During break time, all types of clubs ask Elis to join their club. A girl miko makes her way through the crowd and asks Elis if she likes astronomy which she says she does, all the miko needs to here as she leads her to the astronomy clubroom. The miko introduces herself as a senior named Akabane, Kureha. The girls talk a bit as Hiiragi finally makes it to the steps of Kimei Academy. A limo comes out of no where as huge men surround Hiiragi and the girl who rang the bell from before sits in the limo asking him to accept with a “yes” or “ok” as he is thrown into the limo by the huge men. Back at the clubroom, Elis asks if Kureha is the only member but she responds that her childhood friend, Hiiragi, is also a member but he rarely makes it to school due to “complications.” At that moment, Hiiragi is battling miniature oni with his sword when he finishes and takes a break for lunch. He apparently missed an oni as one tries to sneak up behind him only to get a fist in its face.

Kureha takes Elis up to the school roof to show her the shrine at the top as well as show her the surrounding area. Elis notices a mysterious tree that isn’t in bloom and Kureha explains that it is called the “Legendary Tree” that blooms when people admit each others love underneath its branches. A strange energy from the tree suddenly strikes Elis who has a headache after the “attack” but says she’s alright. Two people spy on the two and plan for an attack.

Later that day, Elis is at home and writing about her day to her Oji-sama (grandpa) and at the same time Hiiragi exits a tunnel attempting to go to an empty school when a helicopter above with the girl asking if he will accept her request with a “yes” or “OK” literally hooks Hiiragi and takes him somewhere. Back at Elis’s apartment, Elis picks up a white rose and admires it when a red moon appears outside. Elis is shocked by the moon and is mysteriously poked by a rose without thorns and blood spews forth from the would as a little mound of blood on her finger. Elis is flooded with information and goes into a trance as her bracelet glows while her left eye shines blue. At Kureha’s family shrine, Kureha notices the red moon and heads out to see Elis coming out from her apartment and going towards school, Kureha follows.

At the school, Elis, still in a trance, is in front of the “Legendary Tree” where a orange orb appears before her that she grabs. She takes hold of the orb and is taken out of her trance by Kureha who calls out her name. Elis doesn’t remember anything that just happened when a mysterious spirit pressure is felt by both girls. A “gekkou” (think of fuzetsu from Shana or you could say a cut off section of the world) where a chimera appears before the two. Kureha takes out a mechanical arm bow that has warding charms in it to destroy the creature but to no avail as it simply forces away the attack. The chimera pounces and is about to kill the girls when Hiiragi comes out of the sky and lands on the chimera where he cuts off one of its three heads.

He fends off the chimera with Kureha’s help but it still manages to slip by the two and move towards Elis at a speed which neither of the two fighters can stop. Elis calls out for help from her “oji-sama” when the chimera shoots a stream of fire at her when the orb appears before Elis and integrates with her bracelet. Magical incantations fill Elis’s mind as a shield is produced in front of Elis that protects her from the fire. Hiiragi takes the opportunity to attack and destroy the chimera. Kureha announces that Elis must be a wizard if she could do something like that and Hiiragi introduces himself to Elis as Hiiragi, Renji who has been sent to protect her. Up at the space castle, the “yes” or “ok” girl introduces herself as Anzelotto who owns the castle and now asks Elis if she would accept her request with a “yes” or “ok.”

Impression:
This is a anime I look forward to watching. It has the classical elements of an RPG which I love to play. In fact, this anime originally came from the RPG “Night Wizard”. I like the old school base with the whole miko and magic elements mixed the current day elements. Magic and weaponry mixed together to form weapons to destroy enemies bent on destroying the world, classic ^^. There is comedy in this anime, especially with Anzelotto’s “yes” or “ok” which I found amusing. The art is nice and some scenes, like the Legendary Tree blooming, was something out of an old school RPG. Check it out if you like RPG’s and anime, something to watch for the Fall season.

ohoh didn’t heard about this show. I’ll try it since I also like all those anime based on RPG.
I also started Prism Ark which is related to an (ero) rpg, and looks interresting ^^

For some reason this show didn’t go over very well with me. Though, admittedly, I’ve only watched one episode. So far I found that I liked rental magica a lot better, grouping the two into the same genre.

@lu-k: It’s good to try things at least once ^^.
@Shirukii: we’ll see how things go with the anime, hopefully it does become better. The first episode could have been better but left an impression on me that led to this post ^^.

I really enjoy this show’s tongue in cheek nature, shameless whoring every RPG cliche. :)

Skip it. It was a series of the same jokes in every episode, had a lot of posturing and unoriginal elements. All in all, I’d give it a D-

Aikoto’s last blog post..Otome Wa Boku Ni Koishiteru
