What’s better than being an otaku? Watching other otaku acting like otaku’s lol. That’s what you get when you watch Genshiken 2, the second season. Genshiken continues where it left off in the OVA’s with Sasahara accepting the role of chairman of Genshiken (short for:Gendai Shikaku Bunka Kenkyūkai), in English that is “The Society of Modern Visual Culture” and with two new characters, Oguie and Kuchiki being the newest members of Genshiken. What will the future bring with the new season of Genshiken?
Sasahara arrives home and is happy to find a acceptance letter by Comic-Fes saying Genshiken has a spot reserved to sell doujin. Sasahara calls up a few people to let them know the news. Later on he goes to the Genshiken clubroom to have a talk with everyone about the big news. He finds Madarame eating yakisoba and surprises him with the news. They soon talk about what their doujin should be about, what else than perhaps their favorite anime, Kujibiki Unbalance. While they were looking at ero sketches of the Chairman and Yamada, Ogiue comes in with her Oguieisk attitude and they suddenly change the subject to Oguie. Sasahara tells Oguie about Comic-Fes and turns back to Madarame about the schedule for Comic-Fes when Madarame notices Oguie drawing. Sasahara asks to see Oguie’s drawing and both Sasahara and Madarame are amazed at how well Oguie draws in such a short time.
Madarame jokes with Sasahara that Oguie should draw some of the doujin but Sasahara states that it was going to be an ero doujin, nonetheless Oguie agrees to the boys surprise. Sasahara asks Oguie to draw a few pages to not overwork her and Oguie is in a state of happiness in how she would be able to sell something she draws at Comic-Fes. Ohno, Tanaka, and Kuchiki suddenly enter through Genshiken’s door and the three notice the acceptance letter and start talking about it. Ohno volunteers herself to sell the ero doujin and cosplay as the Vice Chairman to draw in customers, which Oguie still finds disgusting. Kousaka and Kosube come in and they do start talking about Comic-Fes.
Later on, Sasahara heads over to the Manga Club’s clubroom to talk to the president on how to handle printing fees. The president is more than happy to help out but wants Sasahara to let no one else know about Genshiken’s participation in Comic-Fes. He is also happy to learn that Oguie is doing well in Genshiken after the earlier incident at the manga club. Sasahara wonders why but the president says it’s nothing to worry about as long as he doesn’t tell anyone else. The reason being Haraguchi, the annoying fellow who must stick his nose in everything, who has somehow found out about Genshiken’s entering Comic-Fes and couldn’t resist sticking his nose into Genshiken’s business. He even suggests making a consolidated doujin together by calling his contacts who are actually famous doujin artists to make a couple pages each for the doujin. Haraguchi tells Genshiken that a doujin like that could easily sell 3000 copies for 1000 yen, making a gross profit of 3,000,000 yen. But, Sasahara declines and says this first project should only be done and supported by Genshiken. But it’s too late, as Haraguchi has already talked to his contacts who have agreed that they could do it. Sasahara takes it upon himself to call up all the contacts to kindly decline their participation which turns out wasn’t really hard as all of Haraguchi’s contacts hate the guy personally, though you never know when you could use a PR guy like that.
The next day, Sasahara goes over the detail of the financing, deadlines, and possible profits with the group with an optimism towards the future of Genshiken.
Impression:
Yahtaa, another season of Genshiken ^^. There’s nothing like watching a “slice of life” anime that I can actually relate with lol. Genshiken is something that digs deep into what it is to be an otaku in this day and age without being too serious or comical but just the right amount to be enjoyed . I’ve been really looking forward to the second season and it’s sure to be a good one. What’s interesting is that the manga is actually finished in Japan and is even finishing up in America, I have already a couple of the later manga’s after the OVA, won’t say what happens but will say that it’s something you don’t want to miss. The character design is different compared to both the anime and the OVA, I would say it’s more of a mix of both. You have the nicer look coming from the OVA but more of the first season look. I like the second seasons animation much better than both. What I really like though is OGUIE ^^. Oguie is my favorite character in Genshiken, her self-otaku hating attitude and comedic looks is what draws me to her. The whole Yaoi thing is something I have come to expect and don’t mind. I wish Oguie was in the first season but I bet we’ll see lots more of her in the second season. Take a look at the pictures with Sasahara’s back facing the TV with the figures on top of it, the figure in blue is Ohno that you can buy in real life. If you haven’t watched the first season or the OVA of Genshiken then I recommend you do that first. Once you’re finish then a whole new season awaits you to watch and enjoy ^^.
